Project: Upper Shadow and Shadow Lake Dam Spillway Modifications
Client: Shadow Lake Inc.

dams

Shadow Lakes, Inc. is a private lake community in the Borough of Franklin Lakes, Bergen County. The Association owns two lakes, each created by an earth embankment dam, namely the Upper Shadow Lake Dam, and the Shadow Lake Dam. Based on classification reports generated by GSE on behalf of the Lake Association and submitted and approved by the NJDEP Bureau of Dam Safety, both of these dams have been recently classified as Class II, Significant Hazard dams in accordance with N.J.A.C. 7:20. In order to comply with current Dam Safety standards, GSE was recently retained by Shadow Lake, Inc. to design the necessary spillway modifications to the spillways presently serving both the Upper Shadow Lake Dam and Shadow Lake Dam to meet the established spillway design flood. GSE incorporated an innovative “labyrinth” design to allow for a reduced spillway footprint and significant reduction in overall construction costs when compared to more traditional designs.
