Project: Water Distribution System Water Hammer Analysis
Client: Township of Cedar Grove
![]() |
The Township’s water distribution system has historically been
plagued with operating anomalies such as water hammer, air entrapment,
and unstable pressures. The distribution grid most affected historically
by these occurrences is the Township’s main or low service area.
Recently the problems with air entrapment have been exacerbated in this
section resulting in numerous complaints from Township residents. The
Township retained GSE to investigate the cause of these occurrences and
to provide recommendations towards mitigating the problem. In witnessing
the system operation, GSE suspected that system surges are a significant
contributor to these occurrences. As such, GSE developed and implemented
an approach towards confirming, locating and mitigating the unstable system
conditions in area in question. The approach which included an inspection
of all air entry points, witnessing the pump operating sequences, and
gauging system behavior in the areas most affected, GSE was able to confirm
that the system operations are producing system surges which in turn are
allowing air to enter the water distribution system at the areas in question.
GSE provided specific mitigation steps at the source (pump station) which
when implemented mitigated the problem in total.
